Woman abuse
It is a word that evokes reactions. Unfortunately not enough, however. The subject is extremely pressing; violence against women is much, much more common that one likes to think.
There is a difference between a violent man and a man who beats women. Women do not choose to live in a violent relationship, it is men that choose to beat women. It is a myth that women go from one violent relationship to the next – in fact, most women don't.
Women are exposed just because they are women. On a societal level, women are, as a group, subordinate to men. Women abuse is a symptom of the missing equality between men and women. Women from all groups are exposed to violence.
The main reason that a woman stay in a violent relationship, is the fear for what will happen, to herself or to the children, if she tries to leave but fails. Most women actually repeatedly try to leave their violent husbands, before they finally succeed. Violence is preceded by a gradually increasing psychic abuse and control, something that makes it harder for the woman to leave. This control also includes economic aspects, and many women do not have access to their own finances.
In 2003, over 22 000 cases of women abuse were reported. In three out of four cases, the woman knew the perpetrator. And in two out of three of these cases, the woman had a close relation to the man. Still, not many women actually report such cases of violence. Studies have shown that a majority of cases of women abuse – between 75 and 80 percent – are not reported to the police. Of every case, only 22 percent were classified as closed. Closed means that the reports led to prosecution, sentence or failure of prosecution. In the cases when women knew the man, 24 percent of the cases were closed.
